AutoCAD 2027 focuses heavily on reducing manual drafting friction through native AI tools and transitioning collaboration away from traditional file-locking into a cloud-connected ecosystem.
The most significant new features and workflow changes include:
Borrowing a page from Revit’s worksharing playbook, AutoCAD 2027 eliminates the classic "File is locked for editing by another user" headache.
How it works: When a DWG file is hosted on Forma Data Management (formerly Autodesk Docs), multiple team members can open it simultaneously.
Instead of hunting for minor drafting imperfections manually, the new Geometry Cleanup tool acts as a file health check.
It automatically scans your active drawing for common drafting errors like tiny gaps, overlapping line overshoots, undershoots, and slightly misaligned angles.
It highlights these errors directly in your drawing space using visual markers and provides a palette with targeted options to fix or ignore them.
The built-in assistant is now deeply contextual, leveraging the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard to understand your active workspace rather than just answering generic help questions.
Natural Language Selections: You can type text prompts to create object selections (e.g., "Select all doors on Layer 3").
Standards Checking: You can upload an official CAD standards file and use natural language to ask the assistant to validate your current drawing against it.
Information Queries: You can ask plain-language questions like "What blocks are used most in this layout?" to get immediate, filtered summaries.
Autodesk is centralizing its ecosystem. Standard standalone AutoCAD subscriptions now bundle Forma Data Management Essentials.
Connected References: If external reference (Xref) files are moved or renamed in your cloud folders, the File References pane now includes a "Missing" toggle that auto-suggests path resolution repairs.
Connected Support Files: Tool Palettes and Custom UI configurations (.cuix files) can now be centralized in the cloud. When a team member opens a drawing, the project-specific palettes and interface tools load automatically to ensure organizational consistency.
Layout Tab Switching: A long-awaited engine optimization significantly reduces the lag time experienced when clicking between complex layout tabs in heavy drawing sets.
Extended 3D Graphics Framework (GSF): The 3D engine handles large coordinate models, materials, textures, and shadow occlusion much more smoothly.
Mac-Specific Overhaul: OpenGL has been entirely dropped for AutoCAD for Mac 2027.
